Installing Windows 10 - sell laptop

Close on the heels of Microsoft Build 2014, there were rumors galore about the release of the next version. The grapevine has it that it could be called either Threshold or the next logical number Windows 9. However, the cat was out of the bag at an event in San Francisco, where it was revealed that it would be called Windows 10.

The following day there was a technical preview and the general public became aware that you can officially get Windows 10. However, experts who have tested the software have their own doubts about its stability. Not only were there error messages popping up, some features simply did not work. The operating system is set to hit the shelves in early 2015, and these issues should be fixed by then.

It would probably make sense to have it installed in a PC that you won’t be using every other day. The software being a preliminary build, it may not be a great idea to have it on a PC that you need to use daily. There is bound to be some improvements and updates before the software can become more user-friendly. As you cannot go back to the earlier version once Windows 10 is installed, it makes sense to wait and watch.

In case you already have Windows 8.1 (many are still comfortable with Windows 7) you could probably check the compatibility using Windows 8.1 Upgrade Assistant. You’ll need a 1 GHz processor, or preferably something faster, with a 1 GB RAM of 32-bit or 2 GB RAM of 64 bit. The minimum hard disk space requirement is 16 GB if 32 bit or 20 GB if 64 bit. You will also need a Microsoft DirectX 9 graphics device and WDDM driver.

Go to preview.windows.com where you’ll be prompted to sign up for the Windows Insider Program. Sign into your Microsoft account first and hit the ‘get started’ button. Check the usual Terms of Use and Privacy statement and you’ll notice the message saying ‘Congrats, you’re an Insider. You’ll need to click on ‘Install Technical Preview’ next. You may get a message prompting you to ‘get the upgrade’ if you are using Windows 8.x or any earlier version.

You’ll be prompted to install an ISO disk image file, and you can choose either the 32 or 64 bit. Choose the appropriate language:  English (choice of US/UK) or Chinese/Portuguese as the case may be. You will have to create startup USB using USB Download Kit. Insert the USB key in the slot and run setup.exe, and you’ll be prompted to enter the serial number (found in the Technical Preview page) in order to complete the installation.
